Twitch Of The Death Nerve: A new code of morality
26/04/14 || The Duff
Twitch of the Death Nerve are a UK death metal band affiliated with Grindethic, you can perhaps already fathom what they must sound like – vocals and guitars by Tom Bradfield AND YET members too of Defeated Sanity. “Well – which members, Duff?” you ask, all hypertension and butter on your undershirt, “Is it a member from one of the old demos?” Nay sez-eye: this is none other than the current drummer to one of the biggest names in the death metal scene – LILLE GRUBBLES!
Unfortunately, the flavour he brings to Defeated Sanity is not present for Twitch of the Death Nerve, which is as Grindethic a band as they get – linear, killer riffs with the odd derivative, but there is no doubt that Tom can play and is an aficionado of great brutal death metal, just this is not of the same caliber as Disgorge or of Lille’s band, sadly (turns out actually Lille may have become a drummer for hire having featured on Abhorrent Castigation’s debut album too, and according to entirely unreliable sources, he likewise comes across as a tight session drummer on that – well, here the style is quite standard, really).
With vocals and guitars by Tom, similarities to his own band Infected Disarray and temporary side-project Repulsive Dissection cannot be avoided; this band perhaps sounds like a merger of the two, the riffing of the former and that sense of geographical assembly of the latter, Repulsive Dissection being peppered about the globe and recording separate parts from various locations, going by the standard of Lille’s drumming, I’m inclined to believe such to have been the case with Twitch of the Death Nerve – it doesn’t sound as though these guys have jammed in the same room very often.
So, if you are familiar with Grindethic bands, this is no Terrordrome nor “Prelude to the Tragedy”-era Defeated Sanity, but it is better than say Indecent Excision – speaking of which, there should be a clause in Grindethic band contracts stating a minimum of ten seconds per album for samples, those things spanning some fifteen-twenty seconds of a track are downright insulting. Otherwise, a good mix of breakdown, speed, atmospheric and certainly for those of you who have been patiently awaiting the new Infected Disarray album.
